I've been wanting to make this thread for a while. There are a lot of movies out there that we're all checking out these days. Is there a recent one you feel particularly fond of and want to spread the word about? Or have you just been disappointed by a movie you had high expectations for? (Damn you The International!!!! ) Give us your feedback and a review if you can. You can go Harry style and type up a 15 page essay about the film, or you can just give us a paragraph or 2 about your latest theater experience. Either late this weekend or sometime early next week I'll be posting up a review of Watchmen to kick us off...unless anyone out there has review for us at the current moment.

Hah, I look forward to the Watchmen review ( personally loved the flick). On everyone's favorite website (GameFAQs >_>) I actually have a movie journal set up where I do a lot of write ups. I'll post two here for movies I really want to get out and watched by many.
Let the Right One In (2008)
I saw the previews for this and knew immediately it was something I wanted to see, definitely more than any other foreign film I had seen advertised in a long time. I have a penchant for gothic themed stuff, and have an undying love for some Vampire/Zombie things depending on if it's actually good or not.
It tells the story of 12 year old Oskar, who (as we see) lives with his mother, has an unstable and distant relationship with his father and is cruelly picked on at school. He slowly befriends his next door resident, a "12 year old" girl named Eli, and they slowly begin to bond. The two share many minor moments that paint a nice picture of their relationship. When the revelation of Eli's actually state of being is visited upon Oskar, his response seems believable and takes the story in an interesting direction. The child actors perfectly capture the mood in fairly restrained and nice performances. The takes on vampire mythology are great. I liked just about everything they did, from the inventive and explosive suicide sequence (which was-- without giving the wrong impression-- awesome) to the idea referenced in the title, it's all handled really well. It's also nice to finally see what happens when a vampire eats regular food... Hah.
The film takes it's time, it's pace is definitely slow, but that wasn't at all unexpected. Its mostly static camera work brings out the coldness, the the spaciousness, the emptiness that pervades the story. Likewise, the silence that is employed underscores it as well. The occasional violence seems so intimate, real, and disconcerting though it doesn't dwell or overindulge. The days have the sort of unfeeling quality, and the nights--while still removed and cold- are almost romanticized. I can't say enough about how well the style fits the films pace and story. There are also interesting moral questions, and there aren't really concrete villains or heroes, and the main 2 characters actions are highly questionable. So rare for something involving children.
The only problems I have with it are minor. I didn't think that the scenes involving strictly adults were as interesting, but it did have a pay off later, and I thought the end was rather abrupt. The scene right before the last is electric and very well done, and I'm not sure what else they could've added... But it just seemed a bit sudden. Perhaps it's just because I didn't want it to end.
9/10
Boy A is also a terrific movie that got overlooked in the past year, but my review for that, now that I look at it, is rather lackluster >_>

Good review manofepictales. You usually have a good taste in films, despite the fact that I still haven't seen several of the movies you've recommended haha. But Oldboy, The Lookout, and this are definitely on my top to watch list. One of these days I will share in the joy of these visual pleasures with you haha!

Why thank you =D. Oldboy is freaking fantastic, but I literally couldn't say anything except "that's messed up" after it was over. I haven't really seen anything else like it. I should check out the rest of the trilogy sometime for sure.
And I still haven't seen, like, 6-7 of your top 25, so it's all good.
